Substance Use Disorders (SUDs) are highly prevalent in society, have their first symptom onset during adolescence and are highly comorbid with other mental disorders and symptoms. Dr. Patricia Conrad’s research focuses on multi-modal longitudinal research designs to establish that substance use behaviours can be predicted by a set of pre-morbid neurobiological, genetic and cognitive factors, which can be targeted in preventative psychosocial interventions.

Professor Conrod’s research laboratory manages multiple genetic-neuroimaing longitudinal studies, as well as many large randomised-controlled longitudinal studies. Using advanced computational modeling of multi-modal data, this research has led to the discovery of neurodevelopmental risk profiles. This research has been published in the top scientific and medical journals, including Science, Nature, British Medical Journal, JAMA-Psychiatry, Canadian Journal of Psychiatry and American Journal of Psychiatry.

As one of the principal investigators in the ENIGMA consortium (, Dr. Conrod is currently developing a research program aiming to understand brain structure, function, and disease by combining genetic and brain imaging datasets from numerous labs. The goal of this project is to maximize statistical power and the yield from existing datasets through very large data pooling efforts.

Along these lines, we are currently accepting applications for a post-doctoral for the ENIGMA addiction project. The candidate will be based at the Research Centre at CHU Ste-Justine, affiliated with the Research Unit on Children’s Psychosocial Maladjustment (GRIP), the Université de Montréal’s Department of Psychiatry. The Conrod Venture Lab brings together trainees with various professional and educational backgrounds, including mathetmatics, clinical psychology, psychiatry, medicine, educational psychology, public health and sociology.

Position description
The successful applicant will have access to a large multinational neuro-behavioral dataset of substance users, which include rich structural MRI and behavioural phenotyping assessments. S/he will contribute to the development of new research based on the existing data as well as the successful operation and coordination of integrating behavioral/neuro-biological information from new studies to the ENIGMA addiction dataset.

More specifically, the candidate will be expected to:
• The development of new research projects using the current data;
• Contribute to supervision of grad students working on the dataset;
• Oversee and contribute to inclusion of new studies to the ENIGMA addiction dataset
• PhD in Psychology, Neurosciences, or Biomedical Sciences;
• Experience working with structural and functional neuroimaging data (preprocessing, analysis, visualzation);
• Presentations/publications focusing neurobiological foundations of addiction and psychopathology;
• Proficiency in using Python/Anaconda modules (Nilearn, Nibabel, etc), and UNIX;
• Excellent writing and oral communication skills in English.
