Funding for Students and postdocs
Recruitment scholarships for MSc ($8000) and PhD ($10,000) students
We are pleased to provide recruitment scholarships to Master’s and PhD students to undertake training in the field of bio-imaging. These scholarships are intended for applicants who have been enrolled in a master’s or PhD research program for one year or less (three terms or less). The scholarships are non-renewable (can only be granted once per student) and cannot be held concurrently with a scholarship from a granting agency (e.g. CIHR, FRQS etc.). To apply, the applicant must be a QBIN student member and their supervisor must be a QBIN regular or emerging member. Applications will be evaluated based on the quality of the proposed project, training environment, and academic record of the student.
Support scholarships for postdocs ($15,000)
We are pleased to provide support scholarships to postdoctoral researchers who do not hold a nominal fellowship. These scholarships are intended to help boost the CV of postdoctoral researchers in order to increase their chances of obtaining larger grants and fellowships in the future. To apply, the applicant must be a QBIN student member and their supervisor must be a QBIN regular or emerging member. Applications will be evaluated based on the quality of the proposed project, training environment, and academic record of the applicant.
Conference allowance ($500)
Student and postdoc members of QBIN are eligible to apply for a conference allowance to attend national or international conferences to present their research in the field of bio-imaging. Conference allowances will be awarded at random, and at most two applications per lab/principal supervisor per year will be granted. The allowance will be in the form of a reimbursement to be paid after the conference or event has taken place. Applications for a conference allowance can be submitted at any time.
Travel for training award
The Travel for Training Award provides financial assistance to QBIN members wishing to travel to another lab located within Quebec, Canada, or abroad for the purpose of training. The award is open to master’s and PhD students, postdoctoral fellows, and research staff members from universities, hospitals and research centres working in areas related to bio-imaging in Quebec. The award is given to enable someone to either receive training at another institution or provide training to someone or a team at another institution. The award will cover transportation (air, train, bus) and accommodation (hotel or apartment rental) of up to $250 per week for a maximum of 12 weeks.
Cégep student mentorship program
The cégep student mentorship program is open to PhD students and postdocs wishing to host and mentor one or two cégep students during a 10-15 week internship. The aims of this program are to provide valuable mentorship experience to QBIN students and postdocs through mentoring cégep students and to recruit the next generation of scientists by welcoming cégep students into bio-imaging labs and exposing them to research. Applicants will be asked to provide a short description of a research project for the intern(s) to complete. The project should be feasible for cégep students within the internship period, with a focus on education rather than research assistance. The interns should be actively involved in the project from the first week of the internship. Successful applicants will be given a $1500 mentorship stipend in recognition of the time and effort it takes to mentor cégep students with little to no experience in bio-imaging research.
Please refer to the Frequently Asked Questions page for further information about funding for trainees.
Funding for Regular Members
Pilot projects ($20,000)
The program offers funding in the amount of $20,000 to support pilot projects related to multi-center and multidisciplinary bio-imaging projects in humans and/or animal models. Applicants must be QBIN regular or emerging members (refer to our membership directory or become a member). Priority will be given to early career investigators, allowing them to collect preliminary data in preparation for grant applications to provincial, federal and international agencies. Second priority will be given to mid-career and senior researchers who are initiating new projects in bio-imaging and also require preliminary data . The pilot project must lead to the submission of a grant application to recognized agencies.
Strategic initiatives ($50,000 renewable once)
**Please note that this competition is on hold for 2021-2022**
The Strategic Initiatives program aims to provide funding for high risk – high gain projects with great potential to obtain future research funding. Successful projects will clearly help to further the development of bio-imaging research in Quebec by fostering collaboration between researchers from various disciplines and imaging modalities and by demonstrating high probability of real applications in health research. Projects may be fundamental or clinical in nature and must lead to submission of a grant application to official agencies.
Inter-network pilot projects ($20,000)
This program is designed to promote interactions between researchers from Quebec networks who conduct research on themes common to both partner networks. Funding amounts to $12,500 per network ($25,000 total). Proposed projects must focus on these themes. This funding is to be used for one or more of the following purposes:
- Generate knowledge and data that can lead to a concrete clinical application or health care
- Obtain sufficient preliminary data to allow the team to submit funding requests to the granting agencies
- Leverage larger grants from partners to conduct a long-term research agenda
- Enable Québec researchers to establish their leadership at the national and international levels in targeted research themes
- Allow, as far as possible, to have an activity or a product dedicated to the transfer of knowledge to users or target populations
